NORFOLK. Lock-ups at Docking, Stalham, Thetford and Watton.

It seems that there are just four lock-ups remaining in Norfolk?
 
 
The lock-up at Docking is situated in Chequers Street on the B1454 road and has been restored by Norfolk Historical Society.

A plaque on the side wall reads :
 
' CAGE AND POUND
This building, the cage, was formerly the local lock-up.
The surrounding area, the pound, was used to enclose animals '.

The lock-up at Stalham is situated next to the old Fire Engine House in High Street. NR12 9BB opposite Upper Staithe Road and it dates to c1820.

Together with the Fire Engine House, it was Grade 11 listed 20.8.1998 (No.470131)
and described as :

  Fire engine house and lock-up. Lock-up c. 1820, engine house dated 1833. Red brick laid in Flemish bond; slate roof.
EXTERIOR: engine house of one storey comprising simple rectangular building. South gable end with double doors of 1983 replacing taller double doors reaching to eaves line. Weatherboarded upper part of doorway 1983. Limestone date plaque above: 1833. Minor tumbling in gable head. No openings to west flank or north gable end.
Lock-up consists of a simple rectangular building: plank door in south gable end with strap hinges and padlock with lock plate and hasp.
INTERIOR: engine house is simple open space without adornment. Lock-up with half of a brick barrel-vaulted roof, remainder collapsed.

The lock-up at Thetford, known as The Old Cage, is situated in Cage Lane, IP24 2BQ.
It dates to 1581 although it was rebuilt in the 17th century and moved to its present site in 1968.
 
It was Grade 11 listed 3.4.1951 (No.384496) and described as :
 
Lock-up. 1581 but rebuilt C17. Dismantled and re-erected on
new site 1968 in reduced form. Dressed stone jambs support
round arch with iron grille above dado level. Built into side
of public convenience.

The lock-up at Watton is situated at the foot of the Clock Tower in High Street, IP25 6AB
.It dates to 1679 although it was altered in the early 19th ecntury.
The tower was built to commemorate 'The Great Fire' of 1674  to house a fire warning bell
as well as the double lock-up.
The building is now the Tourist Information Centre.

It was Grade 11 listed 16.7.1958 (No.220147) and described as :

Lock-up and clock tower. Dated 1679, altered C19. Rendered brick. 2 storeys.
2 square-headed doors under flat hoods on labels, altered in early C19 from
original arched doors. Flat string course rises to enclose clock of 1825
under pediment. Recessed panel below with datestone. 2 4-centred timber
arches protrude above pediment. Arms of Watton above in form of rebus (Wat
: a hare and a Tun : a barrel). Battlemented parapet with frieze of brick
in panels containing diaper and fleur-de-lys. Timber cupola erected 1820 with
copper cap and weather vane.
